Thank You for being a Friend!

March invites us to look ahead with intention and hope. As a season of growth and new beginnings, it reminds us that progress doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built through patience, consistency, and meaningful connection. In times of change, choosing understanding, collaboration, and compassion helps us move forward together.

At Language Essentials, we believe growth begins with connection. By partnering with families, supporting skills beyond the therapy room, and meeting each child where they are, we help build confidence that carries into everyday life. This month—and always—we’re committed to nurturing progress rooted in care, collaboration, and community. 🍀

Rock Your Socks!

March 16th-20th, Join us in wearing your crazy, wacky, or fun statement socks! World Down Syndrome Day is Saturday March 21st (3/21) and we will be honoring it all week!

Why March 21st (3/21)?
3-21 was numerically chosen to represent Down Syndrome. People with Down Syndrome have a triplication (3) of their 21st chromosome.

Why socks?
Chromosomes are actually shaped a bit like socks. The idea of rocking your wacky socks is to celebrate the individuality we all have and make a statement. Someone is bound to make a comment about your eye-catching socks. A perfect chance to talk about supporting, celebrating, and ending the stigma of individuals with differences, like Down Syndrome, and recognizing  we’re all beautifully different!

Pro Tips & Talking Tricks

Lucky Charms Sensory Bottle

Play

Lucky Charms Sensory Bottle

Sensory bottles support focus, self-regulation, and sensory exploration for children and adults. Watching the contents move can have a calming effect, helping reduce stress while encouraging attention and curiosity. Because they offer predictable, soothing sensory input, sensory bottles are often used during transitions or moments of overwhelm—making our Lucky Charms Sensory Bottle a fun and supportive way to engage the senses.

Supplies Needed:

Clear plastic bottle (water bottle size works great)
Water
Clear glue or Baby Oil (optional — makes the contents move more slowly)
Funnel or Liquid Measuring Cup (optional — helps with pouring)
Lid / Cap (secure tightly!)

🍀 Sensory & Visual Fillers
Plastic Charms (or small beads, etc.)
Glitter, sequins
Food coloring (optional — for a themed look)

🛠 Optional for Durability
Hot glue or strong tape (to seal the lid securely)

Directions:
1) Fill your bottle about ¾ full with water and food coloring.
2) Pour in your "Lucky Charms" and any glitter or fillers.
3) Add clear glue or baby oil if you’d like a slower, calming flow.
4) Secure the lid tightly and seal with hot glue or tape.
5) Shake and watch the magic settle!

Why We Love This Activity:

From both an OT and Speech Therapy perspective, sensory bottles support regulation, attention, and learning by providing calming, predictable sensory input. The slow visual movement can help children feel more organized and focused, making it easier to participate and communicate. Sensory bottles also encourage fine motor use, cause-and-effect understanding, and language development through shared play—such as naming colors, describing actions, and taking turns. When children feel regulated and engaged, they’re better able to learn, connect, and communicate.

This March, we'd like to spotlight Holi, the vibrant Hindu Festival of Colors! Celebrated by many of our families. Holi marks the arrival of spring and symbolizes joy, love, renewal, and the triumph of good over evil. Traditionally, families gather to throw brightly colored powders, dance, laugh, and enjoy time together in community.

At Language Essentials we normally try to share activities that would boost speech, motor skills, and other occupational and communication goals that would go well with the season and/or holidays. Holi is a unique holiday because so many of its celebratory practices naturally incorporate activities that boost connection, expression, and sensory-rich experiences — all things that support children’s development. Color play, movement, music, and shared traditions create beautiful opportunities for language growth, social skills, and sensory exploration.

Holi is FULL of sensory components:
Tactile play (powder, water)
Gross motor movement (throwing, dancing)
Visual processing (bright contrasting colors)
Social participation in community settings

Pairing the sensory and motor skill boosting activities with speech goals, you can aid things like: descriptive language, identifying words (like colors), sequencing, and requesting.

As we welcome spring, celebrations like Holi remind us that growth, joy, and connection look different for every family — and that’s something worth celebrating. 🌈

Let's Get Social!

Welcome Kate!

Hi, I’m Kate! I’m a Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Fellow. I earned my MS in Speech-Language Pathology from California State University - East Bay, and have been working with clients with expert supervision for the past year and a half. I have worked with children of all ages and stages as well as adults, and have loved all of it. I came to speech therapy with a background in case management with recently arrived refugees. I chose this field because it combines my love of language with my love for supporting the growth of others. I was born and raised in Berkeley, CA but have lived many other places, including Cairo, Egypt, where I lived for a few years and studied Arabic. I am so excited to get to meet the Language Essentials community and work with its amazing clinicians, clients and families.

Welcome Casey!

Casey is a licensed occupational therapist with over 6 years of experience. She specializes in working with kids who have sensory processing challenges, developmental delays, learning differences, and neurodevelopmental differences. Her experience spans outpatient clinics, nature-based settings, and schools. With advanced training in sensory integration, self-regulation strategies, handwriting instruction, and visual perception, she is passionate about creating a safe, fun environment where kids can thrive and reach their fullest potential.

Casey graduated with her Bachelor of Art in Psychology from Mills College in 2010. She received her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from San Jose State University in 2019. Casey loves to spend time with her friends and family outdoors, traveling, trying new restaurants, horseback riding, and reading.
