A new school year means new routines, classrooms, and opportunities to grow. A little preparation can help your child feel confident, regulated, and ready to learn. Here are 5 simple ways to make the transition smoother:
1. Build Predictable Routines Practice consistent wake-up, bedtime, and morning routines. Visual schedules can also help children know what to expect.
2. Plan for Sensory Needs Consider what may feel overwhelming at school, such as noise, transitions, or busy environments. Simple supports like headphones, fidgets, or movement breaks can help.
3. Connect Home, School & Therapy Collaboration is key! Sharing your child’s strengths, needs, and successful strategies helps parents, teachers, and Speech & OT therapists stay on the same page. Our Communication Needs Sheet is a great way to start that conversation.
4. Keep Therapy Consistent As school schedules fill up, maintaining regular therapy helps provide continuity and keeps goals moving forward. Let us know about schedule changes as early as possible.
5. Practice Skills in Everyday Moments Reading, talking, playing, and practicing independence at home are all opportunities to reinforce therapy goals. Small moments add up!
Keep the Conversation Going
Your child’s success is a team effort. If you notice changes in their communication, speech, language, movement, or sensory needs at home or school, share those observations with their therapist. With the appropriate Consent to Share Information, we can collaborate with teachers and other members of your child’s support team.
Help your child’s teacher get to know their communication needs! Download and share our Communication Needs Sheet to start the school year with everyone on the same page.
