Make-Up Sessions, Stronger Outcomes: The Value of Therapist Variety
|
We have a great staff here at Language Essentials. Everyone is highly trained and experienced in their respective fields. With the weekly sessions you or your little ones attend, it’s easy to build a strong bond with your therapist—and we encourage it! A good relationship with your therapist helps foster a productive environment for meeting your goals.
However, if a therapist is unavailable or a make-up session is needed, we are often asked about the potential disruption to routine when your regular therapist isn’t available. Let’s explore some of the benefits of working with a variety of therapists at Language Essentials:
– Reinforcement of Goals in a New Way: It’s perfectly natural to be concerned about a disruption in routine when offered the chance to work with a new therapist. However, it’s that very routine that can be strengthened by working with someone new. Even when focusing on the same skills and concepts, a fresh perspective can deepen understanding and improve retention. Keeping your weekly sessions consistent and making up missed sessions helps reinforce goals, practice, and routine—ensuring you don’t fall behind. While it may be tempting to wait for the comfort of your regular therapist, staying consistent with your sessions and working on your goals helps you continue progressing in a timely manner. You might even discover a new way to approach a goal or find an activity you’d like to introduce in your regular sessions!
– Exposure to Different Therapy Styles: Each therapist brings unique expertise and techniques, allowing clients to experience a variety of evidence-based approaches. All our therapists are highly skilled, and each one contributes their individual background and tools, shaped by years of experience with a diverse range of clients. When you’re open to working with multiple therapists for make-up sessions, you’re giving yourself access to a wider range of strategies and perspectives—adding more tools to your toolbox!
– Increased Scheduling Flexibility: Having multiple therapists available for make-up sessions allows for greater scheduling convenience and ensures that clients stay on track with their goals. We all know life is busy, and sometimes the most convenient time for your schedule doesn’t align with your regular therapist’s availability. Being open to working with another therapist gives you more flexibility to fit sessions into your schedule instead of trying to work around someone else’s.
– Therapist Collaboration: As we’ve mentioned, working with multiple therapists provides a variety of perspectives that can enhance and adapt treatment plans. One of the biggest benefits of our clinical practice is the collaboration between therapists. Our team often works together behind the scenes, sharing ideas and strategies to support each client’s goals. Your regular therapist will communicate with the make-up therapist to ensure continuity of care and a shared understanding of your progress and needs. In most areas of life, we value a second opinion or a new perspective—speech therapy is no different! Take advantage of our collaborative team and let us work together to support you.
– Building Adaptability and Generalization Skills: Practicing communication strategies with different therapists helps clients generalize skills across settings and communication partners—an essential part of real-world success. At the end of the day, the goal of speech therapy is to help each individual communicate effectively in everyday life. That means being able to interact with people outside of our regular routines and stepping outside of our comfort zones. Practicing with a variety of speech therapists in a safe, supportive environment helps build the adaptability and confidence needed for those real-life experiences!

Let's all welcome the newest member of the LE team, Josie! So glad to have you with us!
From Ms. Josie: Hi, my name is Josie and I’m a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) with 10 years of certified experience and 15 years working in pediatrics. Before becoming a SLPA I worked as a registered behavior technician as a language assistant. My journey into speech therapy began when one of my own children needed services, and that personal experience sparked a deep passion for helping people build strong communication skills. I love working collaboratively with families, ABA teams, and occupational therapists to create trusting, supportive environments that help my clients thrive. Over the past five years, I’ve also had the opportunity to lead a fast-paced, integrated speech and OT team as a SLPA Lead Assistant Manager, where I enjoyed mentoring fellow professionals and fostering teamwork. When I saw that Language Essentials opened in my hometown of Tracy, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to serve my local community and leave the South Bay commute behind. I’m so excited to be part of the Language Essentials team and to support the amazing families we work with!

Roll for Inclusion is powered by two longtime therapists, Alyssa DeMarinis (BCBA & special educator) and Hanna Bronnenberg (OTR/L), with years of experience supporting neurodiverse individuals, they’ve swapped classroom walls for café tables and hope to create a space where inclusion, play, and community thrive—because everyone deserves a seat at the table. Though they don't have a physical location (YET!) they will be holding a host of pop-up inclusive game nights throughout the East Bay. Their first will be a family focused event at Wingen Bakery in Livermore!
July 13th at 4-8pm. Family focused, all skill and ability levels welcome!
We look forward to teaming up with the wonderful Roll for Inclusion folks in the future! LE Game night anyone? For more information check out: rollforinclusion.com

We love a good pet friend or cherished family companion—so here at Language Essentials, we wanted to show off and celebrate the special animals in our lives. If they’re covered in fur, have fins, scales or feathers, we love them dearly all the same.
Meet Molly– Our Star of the Month! 🐾
Fun Facts: Richard’s sweetest, scruffiest companion . Whether she’s strolling by the ocean with the breeze in her fur or lounging like a queen on her cozy couch throne, Molly brings warmth, calm, and a little sparkle wherever she goes. She’s got a gentle soul, a curious spirit, and a heart full of love — the kind of dog who makes every day feel just a little more special.
Such sweet sentiment about Molly, Richard. 💕
